Residential Electric Rates

Due to a billing error in November, some electric customers received an additional fuel cost credit related to their October electric usage. A one-time bill correction is being made to customer bills to resolve this billing error. We apologize for any inconvenience.

This bill correction applies to all rate classes except for Green Power Tomorrow (GPT) and Shared Solar. If customers purchase 100% of their energy through GPT, for example, they did not receive the fuel credit because those customers did not pay for the fuel for which we provided the credit. They also were not impacted by the billing error.

For customers who purchase less than 100% of their electricity through GPT and/or Shared Solar, they received the credit on only that electricity not covered by GPT and/or Shared Solar. If they were impacted by the billing error, the impact also was only on that electricity not covered by GPT and/or Shared Solar. For example, if a customer purchases 60% green energy, they received the credit on 40% of their kilowatt-hours and the billing correction only applies to 40% of their kilowatt-hours.

MGE is serious about our responsibility to provide safe, reliable energy at reasonable rates. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin reviewed our recent Fuel Cost Plan and granted a slight increase in residential electric rates effective Jan. 1, 2018.

This slight increase is because projected fuel market prices are higher for 2018 compared to 2017. The higher market prices increase the cost for electric generation and purchased power. The approved surcharge rate is $0.00017 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

With this increase, the typical MGE residential electric customer using 510 kilowatt-hours per month will see a monthly increase of approximately $0.09.

There are no changes to natural gas rates in 2018.
