Gas Meter Location

Gas equipment mounting and location

Please note that MGE’s gas meter policy has recently been updated.

Multifamily gas meters.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, MGE will be unable to accommodate requests for locating regulating and metering equipment indoors—with few exceptions. This is to ensure safety, access for emergency response and adherence to federal guidance for gas regulating and metering equipment.

For commercially zoned multiunit residential, commercial and industrial customers, meters should be located outdoors, in a location where:

  • the gas regulating and metering equipment is easily accessible by MGE crews for emergencies and routine maintenance and inspection, and
  • the equipment can freely vent to the atmosphere.

If your project has zero lot line clearance, is in an urban design district or is at a property designated as a Certified Historic Structure, please contact us during each stage of your project—especially during the earliest stages—to discuss how MGE can help plan meter set locations early in the design process.

MGE is committed to working with you to help ensure a successful project. If you are currently planning a project, please contact us at 608-252-7373 to discuss outdoor locations for new gas equipment.
