Powerline: Partnering in energy education

Fall 2025

Dear Educators,

The MGE Schools Partnerships Team wishes you well as you prepare to head back to school. We are here to support you with energy-related programming and resources.

We appreciate the opportunity to have partnered with many of you already around safety and sustainability. If we haven’t visited your classroom yet, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can bring energy education to your students.

Free Educational Resources and Services

MGE offers programs and materials designed to support your curriculum and engage students in meaningful, hands-on learning—at no cost to you. These opportunities include:

  • Sustainable Energy Presentations: Bring renewable energy and energy efficiency concepts to life with our Pedal Power Bicycle and Solar Oven. In this issue of Powerline, one of our residential energy engineers and a member of our Schools Partnerships Team explores how our electric grid is evolving with new technologies.
  • Switch to Safety: MGE’s safety consultant, a retired Madison educator, offers a dynamic program to teach fourth graders about indoor and outdoor electric safety. Our tabletop display known as Hazard Hamlet engages youth in these important concepts.
  • Earth Day Every Day Fun Book: Earth Day is celebrated officially once a year, but MGE’s downloadable online fun book offers young people an opportunity to learn about using energy wisely every day.

MGE’s Schools Partnerships Team also is available to participate in school events such as community resource fairs, “Read Your Heart Out” and career exploration days. We highlight recent examples in this issue of Powerline. To schedule a program, request materials or invite MGE to your school event, contact De’Kendrea Stamps at eduservices@mge.com.

Empower Your Students to Take Charge of Energy Use

Students in the MGE service area are driving energy conservation through the Renew Our Schools program—a six-week, hands-on competition that empowers students to monitor and reduce their school’s energy use. Using real-time data, students conduct energy audits and implement changes to cut energy waste. Forest Edge Elementary and Malcolm Shabazz High School led efforts that saved a combined 5,895 kilowatt-hours of electricity—enough to power a home for several months. This fall, three more schools will join the initiative, continuing the momentum in student-led sustainability. Read more about the project and learn how to bring the program to your school in this issue of Powerline.

Energy Assistance for Households

We know back to school can be a stressful period for families. If you know of families struggling to pay their household bills, MGE’s Customer Service Representatives are available to help. We encourage customers to call MGE.

Our customer service team will work with customers and their unique circumstances to create a monthly payment plan. An established payment arrangement may prevent collection activity, late-payment fees or potential disconnection of service.
