Our future is bright
We are committed to growing our use of renewable resources, including solar energy. Reducing the carbon intensity of our electric generation is one of our key strategies for reaching our goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050.
How do solar systems work?
Photovoltaic (PV) systems, or solar panels, convert light energy from the sun into electrical energy. They are made of solar cells, usually silicon, that act like semiconductors. The direct current (DC) generated in a solar panel is routed to an inverter so it can be converted to alternating current (AC). AC is the type of electricity we use in our homes. Multiple solar cells make up a solar panel, and multiple panels create a solar array.
Solar systems provide clean, quiet and sustainable energy that can help lower emissions from electricity generation and reduce our collective carbon footprint. A solar installation can last for decades and requires little maintenance.
Interested in installing solar?
MGE harnesses the power of solar energy through its installations and those of our customers. If you want to invest in solar, it may be best to improve your energy efficiency first to minimize your electric needs. It costs less and pays back faster than purchasing a renewable energy system. You also can support Green Power Tomorrow, an affordable way to use and support clean energy.
If you decide to install a solar array, we recommend that you look into available tax credits offered through Energy Star and financial incentives from Focus on Energy. You may also receive a credit from MGE for the power you generate.
