Schedule “Switch to Safety” for Your Classroom

Our Switch to Safety program is available to fourth grade students at area schools in the MGE electric service area. The 40-minute session is given by former teacher and MGE electric safety education consultant Flossie Baryenbruch.

Hazard Hamlet

The program centers around Hazard Hamlet, an energized tabletop city where indoor and outdoor electric safety scenarios are demonstrated. Participating students and teachers receive follow-up materials, including the Switch to Safety Activity Book and the Scratch and Sniff gas odor safety card.

Why Fourth Grade?

Switch to Safety is beneficial for this age group for several reasons, including:

  • Kids at this age are typically starting to do more things for themselves, like using small kitchen appliances such as toasters and microwaves.
  • These students are old enough to be aware of the danger electricity poses without fearing it.
  • Many kids don’t know what natural gas smells like—or that it’s flammable.
  • The program also allows us to share information with parents about electrical issues and what to do if they encounter them.

Questions?

If you have any questions about the program, contact Flossie Baryenbruch at bflossie1@gmail.com or 608-277-9323.
