MGE's Falcons Fledge
July 6, 2026—Honey and Monarch, the peregrine falcon chicks that hatched in the nesting box at MGE's Blount Generating Station in May, both fledged at the end of June.
Honey
Honey was the first to successfully fledge, although she did cause some concerns after landing on a car near the Moxy Hotel on East Washington Avenue and later flew up to the hotel sign. Some who saw her were concerned she seemed shaken up and called the Dane County Humane Society's Wildlife Center. The Center sent a volunteer out to investigate, and it was determined that Honey was fine.
Monarch
The staff at Blount regularly monitor the area around the facility during the spring and summer months to keep an eye out for downed or injured falcons. On the morning of Tuesday, June 30, staff discovered a falcon chick, later identified as Monarch, on the ground with what appeared to be an injured leg. They safely captured and crated Monarch and contacted the Dane County Humane Society's Wildlife Center.
X-rays at the Wildlife Center showed Monarch had a broken leg. After consulting with veterinarians at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Medicine Program, it was determined that surgery was needed. The Wildlife Medicine Program team successfully performed the surgery on Thursday, July 2.
We're happy to report that surgery went well and Monarch is stable. The veterinarians shared that with their expert care, time to heal and rehabilitation, Monarch is expected to successfully return to the skies above Madison.
