Shared Solar - Strix

Shared Solar logo. Gree, blue and yellow.

MGE is targeting net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. Growing our use of carbon-free energy generation, like solar energy, is a key strategy in achieving this goal—and our customers can help. MGE offers optional programs that make it easy and affordable to power your home or business with up to 100% green energy, hassle-free.

Shared Solar - Strix is a community solar program for MGE customers who wish to reduce their environmental footprint while helping us to reduce carbon emissions. Participants pay an up-front fee and then a monthly premium to subscribe to shares of solar energy generated by MGE's Strix Solar array in Fitchburg.

What is community solar from MGE?

MGE's community solar program offers eligible electric customers the opportunity to purchase shares of locally generated solar energy. Participants share the output of the solar installation. Community solar customers don't receive the solar energy directly—their participation supports the growth of renewable energy supplied to our grid, helping to create a more sustainable energy supply for all MGE electric customers.

Participants do not install or maintain their own systems, and no special equipment is required to participate. Plus, you can take your shares with you if you move within the MGE service territory!

How to participate in Shared Solar - Strix

Participants pay a one-time, up-front fee to reserve a portion of the electricity produced at Strix Solar. Then, they pay a monthly per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) charge for their chosen subscription amount (for up to 50% of their annual electricity consumption). The monthly per-kWh charge will remain fixed with participants, even if they move within MGE's electric service territory, for the life of the six-year agreement.

Two subscription options are available:

Option 1: Higher one-time fee, lower monthly charge
Approximately $0.01/kWh more than MGE's current residential electric rateOne-time up-front fee:
$15 per share
Monthly per-kWh charge:
$0.13160/kWh

($0.09375/kWh for customers on our Cg-4 rate)
Option 2: Lower one-time fee, higher monthly charge
Approximately $0.015/kWh more than MGE's current residential electric rate
One-time up-front fee:
$7.50 per share
Monthly per-kWh charge:
$0.13660/kWh

($0.09875/kWh for customers on our Cg-4 rate)
