Shared Solar Program
Shared Solar offers the benefits of local solar power without having to install panels on your home or business. MGE is expanding Shared Solar with construction of a new 5-megawatt (MW) solar array in Middleton.
Residential and business electric customers can participate in this limited opportunity. Shares are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Shared Solar features
MGE's Shared Solar program gives customers the option to add solar to their energy mix. Participants pay a one-time, up-front fee to reserve a portion of the electricity produced and, under the program expansion, will pay $0.109 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for up to 50% of their annual electric usage (dependent upon the amount purchased). This price stays with subscribing customers for 25 years, even if they move within the MGE electric service territory.
Our first Shared Solar installation was introduced in 2016 and sold out quickly. The 500-kW array on the roof of the City of Middleton Municipal Operations Center began generating energy in early 2017. Nearly 300 residential customers participate.
Our Shared Solar expansion will be constructed at Morey Field in Middleton. The 5-MW solar array is expected to be completed in fall of 2019. The program expansion opens eligibility to include our Residential Time of Use
customers, along with small- to medium-size commercial electric customers
Supporting clean technology
The clean, renewable energy generated through Shared Solar helps the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helps to manage fuel costs that can increase over time.
This partnership with customers and the City of Middleton also advances MGE's goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. Working together, we can reach our shared goal of a cleaner energy future.
