Shared Solar Program

Our community solar program, Shared Solar, offers eligible customers the opportunity to lower their environmental impact and carbon footprint – helping us create a more sustainable energy future. MGE expanded the program in August 2020. Check out a tour of the 6-megawatt (MW) array.

By allowing MGE to own and operate the array, you don't need to install or maintain your own panels, update your roof or remove trees. And, you can still participate if you move within our electric service territory!

Join the Shared Solar waiting list!

Residential and business electric customers can join the waiting list to purchase shares when existing participants leave the program or if new Shared Solar arrays are built to expand the number of available shares. Shares are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no obligation to purchase shares by joining the list, so sign up today.

What is Shared Solar?

Diagram showing how Shared Solar works.

MGE's Shared Solar program gives eligible customers the option to add solar to their energy mix. Participants pay a one-time, upfront fee of $47.25 per share to reserve a portion of the electricity produced. Currently, participants in Shared Solar pay a rate of 10.9 cents per kilowatt-hour, except for Cg-4 customers, for all allocated solar electricity. This price will remain with you, even if you move within the MGE electric service territory, for the life of the contract.

How will Shared Solar impact my bill?

The impacts to your bill will vary depending on your individual electricity use; however, the average residential customer will see a minimal monthly increase, depending on the number of shares. At current rates, we would anticipate the average home joining at 10 shares would see around a $3.00 per month increase.

10 shares covers half the energy use of the average household, which is $36/year.

Business customers can request a personalized Business Impact Report that will detail the eligible number of shares and how your participation will impact your business and its sustainability.

Help us reach net-zero carbon electricity by 2050

The clean, renewable energy generated through Shared Solar helps the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helps to manage fuel costs that can increase over time.

Our first Shared Solar installation was introduced in 2016 and sold out quickly. The 500-kilowatt array on the roof of the City of Middleton Municipal Operations Center began generating energy in 2017. The program expansion at Middleton Municipal Airport is a 6-MW array. Three-and-a-half MW serve Shared Solar participants. The other 2.5 MW serve the City of Middleton and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District under our Renewable Energy Rider program.

Growing clean energy is one of our strategies for reducing carbon emissions as we work toward achieving MGE's goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. Learn more about other solar projects MGE is investing in to reach our goal.
