Shared Solar
Our community solar program, Shared Solar, offers participating customers the opportunity to lower their environmental impact and carbon footprint—helping us create a more sustainable energy future. Shared Solar participants purchase shares of solar energy produced by MGE solar arrays at Morey Field in Middleton and the City of Middleton Municipal Operations Center.
Shared Solar is easy, affordable local solar. There is no need for Shared Solar participants to install or maintain solar panels, update your roof or remove trees. And, participation can go with you if you move within our electric service territory!
Join the Shared Solar waiting list!
While the current program is closed to new participants, residential and business electric customers can join the waiting list to purchase shares if a new Shared Solar array is built to expand the number of available shares. Shares are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no obligation to purchase shares by joining the list, so sign up today!
Note: If shares become available, MGE will review eligibility of waiting list participants and contact them to confirm their participation level and to complete program enrollment.
What is community solar?
Community solar offers locally generated solar energy. Participants do not need to install or maintain their own systems. Under community solar, participants share the output of the solar installation. Community solar customers don't receive the solar energy directly—their participation supports the growth of solar energy on the grid, helping to create a more sustainable energy supply.
What is Shared Solar?
MGE's community solar program, Shared Solar, is a voluntary option for customers to add solar to their household or business energy supply. Participants paid a one-time, up-front fee of $47.25 per share to reserve a portion of the electricity produced. Currently, participants in Shared Solar pay a rate of $0.109 per kilowatt-hour (except for business customers on our Cg-4 rate) for all allocated solar electricity. This price will remain with participants, even if they move within the MGE electric service territory, for the life of the contract.

Help us reach net-zero carbon electricity by 2050
The clean, carbon-free energy generated through Shared Solar helps the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helps to manage fuel costs that can increase over time.
Our first Shared Solar installation was introduced in 2016 and sold out quickly. The 500-kilowatt array on the roof of the City of Middleton Municipal Operations Center began generating energy in 2017. The program expansion at Middleton Municipal Airport is a 6-megawatt (MW) array. Shared Solar participants are served by 3.5 MW. The other 2.5 MW serve the City of Middleton and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District under our Renewable Energy Rider program.
Growing clean energy is one of our strategies for reducing carbon emissions as we work toward achieving MGE's goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050.
