Summer 2026

Sustainability thrives on collaboration, and that’s the foundation of Nine Springs Solar, an 8-megawatt solar array to be built in Madison. The project is the result of a partnership between MGE and the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (the District).  

Last summer, MGE and the District announced plans for Nine Springs Solar, hosting an open house for neighbors and other stakeholders to learn about the facility, which is expected to be operational next year. MGE will own and operate the array, leasing the land from the District, with OneEnergy Renewables developing and constructing the project. When complete, Nine Springs will generate enough energy to power about 1,900 households, providing cost-effective, carbon-free energy with zero fuel costs. The facility is expected to begin serving customers in summer 2027.

Project advances shared goals  

The District has worked to incorporate sustainability throughout its operations, including reusing waste heat and capturing and reusing biogas. Partnering with MGE to grow local solar is an extension of those efforts. The land surrounding Nine Springs Solar will be maintained with a perennial cover, with the opportunity for harvesting. Maintaining perennial cover helps to preserve farmland and serves to benefit water quality by keeping phosphorus in the soil.
