Tune In to the MGE Falcons

MGE falcon fans, it’s time! The nesting box is ready, our livestream falcon cam is rolling and we are ready for another season of peregrine falcons in downtown Madison.

A Record of New Life

Since 2009, MGE’s Blount Generating Station has served as the nesting spot where 61 peregrine falcons have hatched—including three in 2025. The same female falcon has visited Blount for the last decade. She typically produces three or four eggs each season, and we are excited to see what this spring brings. We also look forward to seeing peregrine falcon expert Greg Septon. He visits each spring to band the new chicks, which helps researchers track their movements and survival throughout their lifetimes.

A Conservation Comeback

Peregrine falcons were nearly wiped out in the mid‑20th century due to the widespread use of the pesticide DDT. After the species disappeared from Wisconsin, conservationists began reintroducing falcons in the 1980s.

Today, peregrines remain listed as endangered in the state. Still, their recovery has been steady—thanks in part to nesting boxes like the one at Blount and the ongoing efforts of organizations and volunteers across Wisconsin.

MGE is proud to play a small role in supporting this remarkable comeback story and helping future generations learn about the importance of wildlife conservation.
