MGE Looks to Add More Solar and Battery Storage to Serve Customers

Madison, Wis., Nov. 5, 2025—Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) is seeking approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to add more than 85 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and 18 MW of battery storage to its generation portfolio. 

These projects represent the latest investments in MGE's efforts to continue reducing carbon as quickly and cost-effectively as it can. 

"With our current plans, by 2030, we will have added more than 40 renewable generation and battery storage projects since 2015, totaling more than 750 MW, propelling us toward our goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050," said Jeff Keebler, MGE Chairman, President and CEO.

The investments include shares in five large-scale solar facilities, one of which includes battery storage. These projects, developed in partnership with WEC Energy Group (WEC), would bring more than 1,000 MW of solar energy and battery storage to Wisconsin. Under the agreement with WEC, MGE would own 10% of each facility, including:

• Akron Solar – 200 MW total; MGE's proposed share is 20 MW.
• Dawn Break Solar and Storage – 180-MW solar and 180-MW battery storage; MGE's proposed share is 18 MW of solar and 18 MW of battery storage.
• Emerald Bluffs Solar Park – 225 MW total; MGE's proposed share is 22.5 MW.
• Fox Solar – 100 MW total; MGE's proposed share is 10 MW.
• Superior Solar Energy Center – 150 MW total; MGE's proposed share is 15 MW. 

By investing in geographically diverse utility-scale projects, MGE is enhancing reliability, managing costs and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future. These efforts are part of a broader strategy that includes: 

• Expanding renewable energy.
• Advancing energy efficiency.
• Supporting the electrification of transportation. 

Together, these initiatives help reduce carbon emissions and support a more sustainable Wisconsin.
