Solar Power Education Resources

MGE is continuing to transition our energy supply to more renewable energy to power our households and businesses. And solar is helping us advance our sustainability goals and achieve net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. MGE has resources to help educate your students about what a solar array is like and how much energy an array can produce in a day, week, month or year.

MGE has video tours available to help your students learn more about MGE solar energy projects located right here in our community. Watch tours of the O’Brien Solar Fields and Morey Field Solar.

Shared Solar interactive production chart

Interactive tool to teach students about solar energy
MGE has two solar arrays in Middleton that provide solar energy for our community solar program, Shared Solar. Our Shared Solar energy production chart shows the amount of electricity produced in kilowatts (kW) by time of day and the total electric energy produced in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Working toward net-zero carbon electricity
MGE has a goal to reduce carbon emissions at least 80% by 2030, consistent with global climate science to limit global warming. MGE continues to transition its energy supply to cleaner sources. Since 2015, MGE has announced projects that are expected to increase the company’s owned renewable generation capacity by more than nine times when completed.

In May 2019, MGE announced its goal of net-zero carbon electricity by 2050, making it one of the first utilities in the nation to commit to net-zero carbon by mid-century. MGE’s net-zero goal is consistent with climate science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) October 2018 Special Report on limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve deep decarbonization, MGE is growing its use of renewable energy, engaging customers around energy efficiency and working to electrify transportation, all of which are key strategies identified by the IPCC.
