Quick quiz: Furnace running too long?

Does it save money in the winter to turn down the thermostat when you are not home or to completely turn it off for a few hours and then turn it back on?

There's no advantage to turning off the heat completely, and if your return is delayed, you could risk freezing pipes. You'll see the same savings if you set the temperature low enough, whether you do it by hand or with a programmable thermostat. The advantage of a programmable thermostat is that it allows you to come home to a warm house (assuming your schedule is predictable).

MGE recommends 68 degrees in the winter when you are home and awake and 55 degrees when you are gone or sleeping (if health permits). If these temperatures sound too uncomfortable, experiment with gradual changes until you find the temperatures that work for you.
