Light Bulb Recycling

These bulbs contain small amounts of mercury:

  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Compact fluorescent
  • High-pressure sodium
  • Mercury vapor
  • Metal halide

Mercury is a hazardous substance. When these bulbs end up in a landfill, the glass breaks and the mercury is released. You can avoid potential mercury pollution by recycling these bulbs that use less energy than their incandescent counterparts.

The Dane County Landfill no longer accepts these bulbs. You can recycle them at several locations in Dane County for little or no charge for small quantities. The City of Madison requires stores that sell fluorescent bulbs to collect and recycle them.
