MGE's New Fitchburg Training Facility

State certifies 57-acre Westport site for development

MGE opened the doors to its new Fitchburg training facility in late July. Previous training facilities were spread out in various locations. Now, MGE's technical training staff all work at this new location and are able to provide training for electric and gas operations and meter and connection employees in the same place.

Indoor training features include:

  • Hands-on training areas located on each end of the building.
  • A large training room/classroom that can be divided into two spaces for training on different topics.

Outdoor training features include:

  • Space and apparatus for trench digging and gas valve training.
  • Areas designed to teach gas leak detection, substation maintenance, electric network training and working in confined spaces.
  • Overhead electric lines that can be energized.
  • Climbing poles to practice safe, proper technique.
  • Underground electrical distribution equipment.

The building itself was designed with efficient and smart use of the space. It incorporates many sustainable building strategies—from using environmentally friendly finishes to taking advantage of natural light.
