At the City of Monona, City Clerk Joan Andrusz, Parks & Recreation Director Jake Anderson, Public Works Director Dan Stephany and Finance Director Marc Houtakker all benefit from using MGE's Summary Billing program.

Monona City Clerk Joan Andrusz is responsible for a huge range of activities: publishing ordinance updates, issuing municipal licenses and overseeing local, state and federal elections. And, until the city joined MGE's Summary Billing program, she also was responsible for managing the city's 37 energy bills.

"Imagine your monthly energy bill times 37," Andrusz said. "It was hard to manage all those bills coming in via regular mail throughout the month—all the paperwork, postage and potential for making mistakes during data entry that comes with paper billing."

Andrusz wanted to try Summary Billing, although she admits to being skeptical about how it would work. "How could MGE go from 37 bills to one? I thought I'd have to figure out how to group the accounts, but MGE took care of that for me."

Now, Andrusz, the finance director and three of Monona's department directors get an email each month alerting them that the next bill is online. "We can access the MGE system, and there's a wealth of helpful information available."

Authorized users can look at the history of each meter and review both year-to-date and year-to-year use. "There are comparison charts for each account, and we know instantly if we're on track for the month or the year," Andrusz said. "We are extremely cognizant that we're spending taxpayers' dollars. The MGE site allows us to be accurate and accountable and makes it easier to monitor our spending. It's an excellent budgeting tool."

Andrusz also likes that Summary Billing helps Monona be greener. "We pride ourselves on our green practices, and Summary Billing helps us improve—from the obvious, like simply using less paper, to providing an easy-to-use website that helps us track and address our energy use."

Setup was easy, and new accounts can be added in minutes—a simple call to MGE is all it takes. "We are very pleased with Summary Billing and highly recommend it to anyone who has multiple accounts to manage," Andrusz said.
