What is the Charge@Home Pilot Project?
MGE will install, operate and maintain Level 2 (L2), or 240-volt, electric vehicle charging equipment at participating customers' homes.
What is the cost to participate?
Participants will receive a ChargePoint Home L2 charger without having to pay up-front installation fees. Participants will be charged $0.64145 cents per day plus applicable sales tax for the term of the contract. The daily charge will be included on the customer's utility bills following the installation date. Note: Customers who sign up for our Shift & Save electric rate can further reduce electricity costs by charging at times when rates are lowest. Participants will need to maintain and pay for home Wi-Fi Internet service for use with the charging station.
How does this program fit with MGE's goals?
As part of our commitment to advancing new technology, MGE is offering this service to help make EV ownership easier for our customers. Encouraging L2 installations not only helps our customers save money, but it also helps us learn how to best manage the impact of EV charging on our distribution system. Participants will be enrolled in a study to help us manage charging sessions.
What kind of information will MGE be able to obtain from participating customers?
Participants agree to share information and data about the charging station and their charging activities with MGE. MGE will use hardware and software included with the ChargePoint Home charging station to periodically communicate with and control the charging stations with prior consent of customers. These activities are intended to test web-based communications with, and management of, charging sessions.
What equipment will be installed?
An MGE contracted electrician will install a ChargePoint Home L2 charger. Installation typically includes extending a separate 240-volt circuit from the electrical panel to the charging station, which includes drilling holes and running electrical wire and conduit. It also includes mounting the charging station to an interior garage wall, exterior wall or pedestal provided as part of the installation.
If installation requires work that is not typical, the electrician will provide a written estimate of the cost of the additional work. The customer is responsible to pay for the extra work required to continue participation in the Charge@Home Program.
Are there any participation requirements?
To participate, you must:
- Be an MGE residential electric customer.
- Live in a single-family home.
- Sign a five-year service agreement and pay about $20 per month plus the cost of the electricity.
- Own the property or get permission to install the equipment.
- Have a suitable location to add a charging station.
- Have an electric panel with sufficient capacity to add a dedicated 40A circuit.
- Have Wi-Fi Internet service.
- Work with MGE to test and evaluate remotely managed charging sessions and allow MGE to test scheduled charging and reducing/ramping charging.
How do I participate?

This assessment will determine where the charging station and electrical connections will be located and if any electrical or other modifications are required for installation. The installer will also verify that you have Wi-Fi connectivity available for use by you and MGE to communicate with the charging station.
