Update: MGE Expects Storm Restoration Efforts to Go Through Tomorrow

Madison, Wis., July 6, 2016—Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) continues its all-hands-on-deck response to the overnight storms that caused more storm-related outages in its service territory than the company has experienced in 10 years.

  • MGE is making progress in storm restoration efforts.
  • More than 18,000 customers impacted during storm.
  • 2,300 customers remain without power as of 11 a.m.
  • MGE expects service will be restored to all customers by the end of Thursday.
  • Never approach a downed power line or anything that comes in contact with it.

During the storm, more than 18,000 customers had their service interrupted. As of 11 a.m., more than 15,000 customers have had their power restored. However, more than 150 separate outage incidents still affect approximately 2,300 customers. MGE now expects service will be restored to all customers by the end of Thursday.

MGE crews have been working to restore service since the overnight hours and will continue to rotate crews as part of the restoration efforts. MGE is receiving mutual assistance from We Energies to help in our restoration efforts.

The majority of these outages are the result of the approximately 55 to 65 mile-per-hour winds that came through our area during the storm. These strong winds have damaged utility poles and knocked down trees and power lines. Often this type of damage takes significant time and resources to clear the trees and branches and then make the necessary repairs.

Customers who have not yet reported a loss of power should call MGE at 252-7111 to report an outage.

Public safety is our first priority. We are responding as quickly and safely as possible. Never approach a downed power line or anything that comes in contact with it. Always assume a power line is energized and extremely dangerous. Report downed power lines at 252-7111.

MGE will provide another update on our outage restoration before 5 p.m.
