Madison, Wis., Aug. 22, 2019 — Lyft and Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) have announced a partnership to increase the use of electric vehicle (EV) ridesharing in Madison and grow awareness of the benefits of EVs. The two companies will offer a $500 bonus to Madison-area EV drivers who sign up to drive with Lyft. EV drivers interested in participating should visit mge.com/Lyft.

"This program is a unique opportunity for Madison-area residents to ride in an EV and experience what they have to offer," said Debbie Branson, MGE Manager of Electrification. "EVs offer convenience—for example, with EVs, there are no oil changes or trips to the gas station. They cost less to fuel and maintain than gas-powered vehicles, and they are fun to drive."

"We can lower carbon emissions and make Madison a greener city by providing Madisonians with a viable transportation alternative to individual car ownership," said JP Biondi, Wisconsin General Manager, Lyft. "We hope this partnership will encourage more Madison EV owners to drive with us and expand the environmental benefits of EVs across the city."

Promoting EV rides is one component of Lyft's broader pledge to operate as a carbon-neutral company. Since April 2018, all Lyft rides have been carbon neutral through the direct funding of emission mitigation efforts, including the reduction of emissions in the automotive manufacturing process, renewable energy programs, forestry projects, and the capture of emissions from landfills. Lyft recently committed to make its entire company footprint carbon neutral and to purchase renewable energy to cover the electricity consumption of every Lyft office space, driver hub and electric vehicle mile in its platform.

MGE's public charging discount
EV drivers who sign up with MGE are eligible to receive 50 percent off the cost of charging at MGE's more than 30 wind-powered public charging stations, including MGE's newest fast charger at The Home Depot off the Beltline Highway and Verona Road in Madison.

"Four of MGE's charging stations are DC Fast Chargers, which can provide 60 to 80 miles of range in 20 minutes," Branson said. "MGE makes it easy to charge almost anywhere—at home, at work and on the road."

MGE customers, including Lyft drivers, who want to charge at home may enroll in Charge@Home for fast and convenient home charging. For EV drivers interested in fueling their vehicle with renewable energy, MGE offers Green Power Tomorrow and Shared Solar.

Electrify transportation to reduce carbon emissions
Transportation accounts for 29 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. The electrification of transportation is considered a key strategy for reducing carbon emissions. MGE has a goal of net-zero carbon electricity for its customers by 2050.

In addition to growing our use of renewable resources and engaging around energy efficiency, MGE is working with customers, stakeholders, municipalities, community partners and others to grow the use of EVs and to facilitate charging options throughout our community.
