Think a small retail store that rents its space can't do much to impact its carbon footprint? Knuckleheads Tobacco & Gifts proves just the opposite is true. A participant in the Green Power Tomorrow program for the last three years, owner Michael Kesselman and his staff believe in the importance of renewable energy and think companies of any size can make a difference.

Here are some of their top suggestions for greener living.

"We recycle everything: cardboard, newspapers, paper from the computer, mail. And we have recycling bins for our employees and customers," said Kesselman.

An air curtain and air door help keep warm or cool air in the store—critical given the temperature and humidity extremes that Wisconsin is known for. Semiannual professional maintenance and weekly air filter changes mean a lower dust level and a more efficient HVAC system. And programmable thermostats ensure more energy-efficient temperatures when the store is closed.

Employees have sealed the windows to prevent air leakage in the store—especially important as it's housed in an older building—and a good portion of the windows are covered to avoid excessive heat gain/loss.

Kesselman, who spends most of his time in Arizona, is extremely pleased with MGE's commitment to renewable energy. "MGE is a very innovative supplier. It's amazing—they have a better solar program than the energy company here in Arizona, even though we have 360 days a year of sun!"
