Facebook is often touted for its ability to connect people, but The Mason Lounge proprietor Bryan Richgels has proof that it's also a good place to motivate them. "We had joined Green Power Tomorrow at the 50% level, and as a matter of course, I put a posting on our Facebook page to let people know and, perhaps, inspire them to follow suit," Richgels said. "There was a fairly fervent response—about 50 people commented—and one of our customers even challenged us to take it to 100%. Naturally, we felt compelled to oblige!"

Richgels has been a long-time Green Power Tomorrow member at home and views supporting the program as an easy way to live his personal mantra: "Be the change you want to see in the world." The Mason's Leader-level membership will save 15 tons of carbon dioxide and over 10,000 pounds of coal each year.

"I just think it's really important that businesses take the initiative to go green. After all, commercial usage represents a huge portion of our municipal energy consumption, and I for one would find it a bit disheartening if businesses don't hold up their end of the bargain while thousands of conscientious households are making the commitment," Richgels said. "Not to mention, this is one of the few things that makes a huge difference yet only takes a phone call to make it happen!"

Although Richgels leases his building on South Park Street and can't take big steps to improve the energy efficiency of The Mason, which specializes in craft beers, the bar definitely has an eco-friendly vibe. Electricity usage is minimal (the bar doesn't prepare food and it's known for keeping the lights quite low), and almost all of its beers are served on tap (versus bottles or cans), so waste is minimal. The Mason is also proud of how its bike racks get used, indicating a substantial customer base that visits on two wheels instead of four.

"Let's just say the back of my business card reads '... a little less apathy, ... a little more chivalry!' " Richgels said. "I'm happy to have the option to support renewable energy through Green Power Tomorrow."
