Coloring, haircuts and… renewable energy? What might seem like an unlikely combination is exactly what the stylists at Salon KB have embraced. "Green power is so earth-friendly," said salon owner Kacy Bott. "How can you help but want to support it?"

Salon KB recently opted to get 50% of its electricity from renewable sources. The move will prevent 10 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year and eliminate the use of nearly 7,000 pounds of coal. "The price difference is minimal," Bott said. "I don't even notice it on my bill."

Renewable energy is just the latest of Salon KB's energy-friendly choices. The business also uses fluorescent lighting throughout its space, stocks earth-friendly hair products and uses fresh air instead of the HVAC system whenever possible.

Salon KB has a water heater upgrade in its future and has made a commitment to keeping its stylists' equipment very up-to-date. "In general, we find that new tools use less energy than the old," Bott said.

The salon also works hard to keep waste out of landfills. It separates and recycles packaging from its hair color products—which, at 30 color appointments a day, adds up quickly!—and encourages client recycling by buying products in bulk. "Instead of purchasing new bottles of hair care products, they can bring in their old container for a refill," Bott said. "They save a couple dollars and we eliminate a lot of waste."

Bott, who leases her space, isn't able to make overall building changes—though she'd "love to put a wind turbine on the building if that would work!"—she knows that even small choices are important. "We all need to do our part to protect the planet.
Thank you,
