It's somehow fitting that a house that's been around for more than a century is now harnessing energy from one of the oldest power sources around: the sun! As a member of the Clean Power Partners program, building owner Betty Thompson is supporting renewable energy in two critical ways—her building is generating solar energy that is sold back to the MGE grid and she's purchasing an equal amount of renewable power from the Green Power Tomorrow program.

The house—a Victorian-era charmer that's located near Camp Randall stadium on West Dayton Street and is now a six-unit apartment building—recently added a four-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) system on its roof. It's expected to generate over 4,300 kilowatt-hours per year or more than half the electricity used annually by the average homeowner. Thompson's son also added a PV system to the roof of his home. "I'd like to," said Thompson, "but I have too many trees!"

Thompson wanted to support renewable energy for some time. "Given the reality of global warming, I thought it was critical."

She looked into geothermal and wind for the apartment building, but solar was the option that made the most sense. "I decided to install the system now because the cost of the technology has come down in recent years and because there were some excellent incentives," said Thompson.

Installation was easy—minor roof reinforcement to support the system and short-term electrical shutdown during the installation and conversion. "The tenants were great about it," said Thompson. "They were definitely in favor of adding the PV system."

Thompson's support of green power will offset roughly two and one-half tons of coal and prevent eight tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year. "It might sound kind of corny, but we each have a responsibility," said Thompson. "I appreciate the chance to make a difference."
