Common Wealth Development is a nonprofit community development corporation that owns and operates Main Street Industries (MSI), a second-stage business incubator in Madison's Capitol East District. MSI provides office and light industrial space to startup and expanding companies. The incubator is at full capacity, serving 18 businesses that range from technology-based to food production firms.

Common Wealth Development purchases green power from MGE for the shared areas in its 50,000-square-foot, mixed-use incubator. Supporting renewable energy through Green Power Tomorrow was not a difficult decision for Sarah Hole, facilities director for MSI.

"We are committed to sustainable practices and support initiatives that teach others about the environmental impact of their actions and opportunities to make wise choices," Hole said. "Buying renewable energy is a very easy way to make a positive impact."

Common Wealth Development received $100,000 from the Business Energy Efficiency Program administered by the City of Madison Community Development Block Grant program. These funds were used to purchase high-efficiency HVAC units, make lighting upgrades and install a solar electric system. The new photovoltaic system is expected to produce more than 11,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and offset more than 13 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

"We will continue to evaluate projects and make other energy-saving improvements going forward," Hole said.
