With dropping prices and improvements in technology, solar photovoltaic (PV) installations have become an increasingly common element on commercial properties around Madison. Add in shorter payback thanks to MGE's Clean Power Partner program—which allows building owners to get paid for tying their PV system into the grid—and they become even more attractive.

Building owner and contractor, Krupp General Contractors LLC, was in the planning stages for its Sequoya Commons Apartments project when it decided to investigate using PV at the site. "We knew PV was a technology we wanted to be a leader in (Krupp's first PV installation was more than 30 years ago at a Goodwill Industries project), and as the long term owner of this building, there were attractive financial incentives and economic benefits to adding it there," said Joseph Krupp, founder and chairman of Krupp General Contractors.

A 10-kilowatt PV system was installed in early 2011. And they are buying enough green energy through MGE's Green Power Tomorrow (GPT) program to offset 19 tons of carbon dioxide and more than 12,000 pounds of coal each year.

The PV system and GPT purchase are just some of the many ways Krupp took a green approach to this project. Others included environmentally friendly stormwater management, recycling a substantial portion of the materials from the building previously located at the site, choosing ENERGY STAR® appliances for the condos and apartments that are part of the complex and using a panelized construction technique for the second phase of the project (apartment buildings).

"This manufacturing method is similar to what's used in a modular home," said Krupp. "It's extremely energy- and material-efficient, and we had virtually no dumpster costs on this part of the project because of it."

Krupp's commitment to green building has two powerful drivers. "The marketplace demands it, and we just think it's smart to use resources wisely. We're glad to have access to programs like Clean Power Partners that help make energy efficiency more economically feasible."
