Arboretum Cohousing, Inc. (Arbco), is a nonprofit membership organization providing sustainable and affordable living spaces for members. Structured as a condominium association, members own their own units, and together they own the land and common space. People with a variety of backgrounds reside at Arbco including individuals, couples, single parents, young families and empty nesters. The community has 40 households.

MGE's Green Power Tomorrow program is a good fit for a group of people who try to be as environmentally conscious as possible. Arbco participates in the program, and several individual households do also.

"Our common purpose is to use resources efficiently and reduce our carbon footprint," said Oscar Bloch, Arbco member. "Buying renewable energy is part of that plan."

Arbco also participates in MGE's Clean Power Partners program. The community sells the power it generates with its photovoltaic system back to MGE. This green energy is then delivered to MGE's electric system for Green Power Tomorrow customers.

"We installed our solar system because it makes a lot of sense environmentally," Bloch said. "Plus, we were able to obtain federal tax credits and a rebate from Focus on Energy to complete the project."

Arbco tries to be innovative when recycling, going above standard requirements.

"We recycle Styrofoam, light fixtures and light bulbs – if we can find a drop-off point, we will recycle it," Bloch said.

Old structures were demolished to make room for construction of the Arbco community. During that process, members recycled as much building material as they could to prevent it from going to landfill.
