Paisley Hair Design
Over the last few decades, companies who combine "looking good" with "doing good" have become increasingly common, and Paisley Hair Design is a great local example. The near-west side Madison salon recently became a member of Green Power Tomorrow at the Leader level and now gets 100% of its electricity from renewable energy—a change that will eliminate 13 tons of carbon dioxide and save over 9,000 pounds of coal each year.

"I had already joined the program at home, and it just made sense to do it at the salon too," said Karla Burke, owner. "If we each do a little bit, it will make a huge difference environmentally and help to drive down the costs of renewable power."

It's that kind of commitment to the environment that caused Burke to update all the salon's lighting to more energy-efficient choices and consider energy use when purchasing equipment.

That's what helped her decide to stock only Aveda products in her salon. Aveda has made a huge commitment to renewable energy: their funding of new wind energy sources offsets 100% of the electricity used in their primary manufacturing/distribution and headquarters, and they're the first beauty company to do so. Plus, Aveda runs a recycling program for the hard plastic caps that most communities can't recycle. "We collect them at the shop and send them on to Aveda," said Burke.

Aveda also creates product packaging with an eye to recycled content and minimal use of materials. Aveda's line of candles—which Paisley Hair Design sells—helps support the Great Lakes.

Burke finds that energy is a popular topic of conversation with her clients. "People are very conscious and aware of the issues," said Burke. "It's great to be part of a community that's actively working to support renewable power."
