While data security is certainly the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of document shredding, Shred-It Wisconsin hopes that energy efficiency will soon be a close second.

"We're working hard to incorporate business practices that can help us run a more sustainable company," said Don Drake, president and owner of Shred-It Wisconsin. "Our decision to join Green Power Tomorrow is one important way to help us reach that goal."

Other examples of the company's commitment to green are easy to find. For instance, by recycling its shredded paper in 2008, Shred-It (companywide) saved over 9 million trees, 3.6 billion gallons of water, 31 million pounds of air pollution and 522,000 cubic meters of landfill space.

Plus, Shred-It trucks use environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids that are biodegradable, recyclable and nontoxic, and the company is currently developing a proprietary hybrid vehicle that will use a battery-powered system to run its shredding equipment.

"The trucks are critical because they're where we conduct most of our business, but better office practices are important too," said Drake. "Getting your electrical power through renewable energy is such an easy step—and just think of the impact we could make if every company decided to join Green Power Tomorrow!"
