USDA Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory
If you ever have a question about wood that your carpenter or lumber supplier can't answer, there is an authoritative resource nearby. The USDA Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) is the nation's only federally funded wood utilization research laboratory. Located in Madison since 1910, the company employs about 200 full-time individuals, including about 50 scientists. FPL conducts innovative wood and fiber utilization research that contributes to conservation and productivity of the forest resource.

In line with its mission, FPL buys renewable energy for its facility from MGE.

"Our organization as a whole is based on a commitment to conservation and the wise use of natural resources," said Michael Kaspszak, head of Research Facilities Engineering at FPL. "Many of our efforts here are aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change. Green Power Tomorrow is an ideal vehicle for us as we work toward that goal."

By participating in MGE's green pricing program, FPL is making an impact – offsetting about 13 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and eliminating the need to burn more than 8,600 pounds of coal per year.

"We have an active green team comprised of employees who are dedicated to reviewing processes and procedures and making suggestions about ways we can increase efficiency and save energy," Kaspszak said.

FPL has installed Solatube lighting – a high-performance daylighting system that uses advanced optics to harness natural lighting and direct it into the building. The laboratory is testing a technology demonstration structure with solar panels and a wood gasification system that generates energy by burning wood, which is a renewable resource.

"These kinds of efforts are important to us," Kaspszak said. "We take pride in knowing that our research and our actions are making a positive impact on the environment."
