With "Waste Management" in a company's name, one would logically assume a commitment to environmental stewardship. And this long-time Green Power Tomorrow partner doesn't disappoint.

"When it comes to doing the right thing for the environment, we're dedicated to being an industry leader," said John Rickard, a plant manager in charge of three area facilities that transport and process bulk and high-grade recyclable materials. "We take a comprehensive approach that touches every corner of our business."

This approach includes choosing where the company's energy comes from. "Alternative energy just makes sense. There's no way to know how long fossil fuels will be available, and it's important for us to take a stand and do our part right now," said Rickard.

Rickard is proud that Waste Management's focus on efficiency and sustainability runs throughout the entire company. "We're always looking for better ways to operate," said Rickard. Recent changes include shutting down forklifts if they're going to be idling for more than 30 seconds, reducing lighting levels during daylight hours and redesigning truck routes to save gas, money and driver time.

Waste Management pioneered the use of landfill gas to generate electricity, and the company also combusts wastes as fuel. The company's renewable energy projects create enough energy to power nearly one million homes, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. By 2020, Waste Management expects to double that.

"Every day is a new chance to be more energy efficient," said Rickard. "And we're working hard to do it better every day."
