Visit the Web site for Unity Church of Madison, and you'll be greeted with the following thought:

Ask not what Mother Earth can do for you—

Ask "What is it that I can do for Mother Earth?"

This is a sentiment that pervades the day-to-day operations of the 200-member church on Madison's east side. "This issue is very important to our congregation," said Laura Hughes, office manager for Unity Church of Madison. "We've formed an environmental team, and this group is always looking for new ways for us to be a more green church."

Supporting alternative power was very attractive to Unity. "We are looking at everything we do, how we consume and how much, and trying to improve in any way possible," said Hughes.

Unity has made additional energy-friendly choices including a switch to compact fluorescent lights in the church and church offices, using recycled paper, switching to a thinner paper stock for their monthly newsletter, buying ozone-friendly cleaning products, and putting outdoor lights on a timer system. The congregation is currently investigating the possibility of adding rain barrels.

"We're trying to find as many innovative ways as possible to go green," said Hughes.
