Hawk House at Badger Rock Middle School

Hawk House at Badger Rock Middle School

The Badger Rock Center on Rimrock Road in Madison is now the site of a new hawk house platform thanks to the efforts of Avi Wolfgram, a recent graduate of the Badger Rock Middle School in Madison. MGE donated a used 35-foot utility pole and the labor involved in setting the pole for the platform. Avi contacted MGE in early summer to inquire about the possibility of donating a pole and installing it as the culmination of the biodiversity project that promotes hawk nest sites in urban settings. Hawks, due to their predatory behavior, help reduce invasive bird species like English Sparrows.

In addition to researching hawk behavior and nesting sites, Avi completed all the upfront work necessary to gain approval from the City of Madison Zoning Department to erect the pole and platform. With the assistance of his grandfather, Avi built the platform, which was mounted securely at the top of the pole. He also wrote a request to the MGE Foundation explaining his project and making the request to donate the used pole and labor. Avi wishes to thank his school advisors, MGE Foundation and Badger Rock staff for helping make this project a success. Now we're all waiting for hawks to take up residence on the new platform house.
