October is Energy Awareness Month—Take action

In celebration of October Energy Awareness Month, set aside some time to learn about energy and ways to save energy in your school and community. Some elementary and middle schools have scheduled an MGE MaGicEnergy show (see story above) to highlight ways students can make a difference to help the environment. Here are more suggestions.

  • Challenge students and staff to organize a "turn it off" day by turning off unnecessary lights in classrooms and other school areas.
  • Learn how your school building uses energy—invite your custodian to give tours of the building's mechanical systems, lighting, kitchen/cafeteria energy users, etc.
  • Start an energy patrol in your school and reward classrooms that save energy.
  • Start an energy club and learn more about energy in your school and community.
  • Design an energy theme display case in your school to highlight ways to save energy at school and home.
