A price to pay
The dangers of meter tampering and service diversion
Tampering with a utility meter is illegal and dangerous. Although MGE works to minimize the cost, this energy loss is shared by all MGE customers.
You can help reduce costs and even save a life. Notify MGE if you see or hear about someone other than an MGE-authorized employee working on a meter or bragging about bypassing the meter or if you believe
a meter has been altered.
Report energy theft and meter tampering. Your information will be kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
• Call MGE at (608) 252-7222,
• E-mail us at customerservices@mge.com or
• File a report online at mge.com/metertampering.
Another risk: Generators in the
wrong hands or places
Portable generators can pose serious safety hazards. Use them with great care and follow all instructions.
• Only use generators outside. Their fumes could be deadly indoors.
• Never connect one directly to a building's wiring system. Its power may "back feed" electricity out of your building; it could harm a line technician or damage the power system.
