Keeping cool, comfortable as the season warms up
Prepare to save money and energy this summer yet stay cool
You can enjoy the warmth of the sun and even humid spells this summer if you know how to keep cool and comfortable without consuming unnecessary energy.
Many ways to save energy also add comfort in warm weather and are easy to implement:
• Grill out: Cook meals outside or use a microwave oven instead of a stove. You'll save energy and improve comfort.
• Use air conditioners efficiently: If you have an air-conditioning system, have it serviced before you really need it. Also:
- Don't overcool your home: Set your thermostat to 78°F or higher if health permits.
- Take it easy with your air conditioner. Lighten its load by using shades and drapes to block out direct sunlight during the day.
- Use setback thermostats to control comfort. When you're going to be away for a few hours, raise the temperature to 85°F. For longer periods away, consider turning off the air-conditioning.
- Use a timer for room air conditioners to control cooling times. Every 1°F you raise the thermostat for eight hours saves 1% on your air-conditioning costs. Save 35 to 40 cents per hour for central units. Save 5 to 15 cents for room units.
