Control heating costs before they control you
Ways to save money, energy during the cold winter season
We all can save energy this winter, while keeping warm and comfortable. Applying these easy practices will also help control your energy bills:
Apply energy-wise home habits:
• Lower the thermostat at night and when you're away (55°F lowest setting). Save 1% for every 1°F temperature decrease over an eight-hour period.
• Check your furnace filter monthly; replace as needed. This will help ensure efficient airflow.
• Let the sun in during the day to reduce heating costs.
• Close the fireplace damper after extinguishing the fire. Closed dampers help to stop drafts.
• Close drapes and shades at night. If upgrading, install insulated window blinds.
• Be sure your furnace air ducts are tight, particularly those that pass through unheated areas. Have them tested for air leakage and fix and/or insulate as needed.
