Safe, smart planting can save energy, reduce problems

Safe, smart planting can save energy, reduce problems

  • Save energy by planting shade trees on the west and east sides of your home. This can reduce air-conditioning demand and save about 5% on your summer cooling costs.
  • Plant only low-growing trees and shrubs under or near power lines. You'll add beauty and safety by avoiding the need to trim limbs away from power lines. Only small trees can be safely planted within 20 feet of overhead utility lines.
  • Call Diggers Hotline at 8-1-1 or 1-800-242-8511 at least three working days before you start digging.
  • Don't plant near a utility meter or a transformer (the green utility box in your yard).
  • Use our Tree Choice and Care online database at mge.com/trees to learn more about trees and shrubs for our area.
