Get ready for the weather ahead
- Be sure your furnace is ready for winter heating service. Have a professional check your heating system at least every other year.
- Seal any through-wall air conditioners with air-tight covers. Remove window units.
- Be sure your home insulation is adequate. If your attic has less than 7 inches of insulation, consider adding more.
- In southern Wisconsin, a value of R-38 or more is recommended for existing homes.
- If your walls have no insulation between the studs, insulating the cavities can add comfort and save on energy costs.
- Make sure storm windows are closed and sealed well.
- Make sure your dryer's vent cap keeps out cold air. Remove lint buildup in the vent cap and hose. Replace any plastic vent with metal.
- Seal around sewer vent piping in the basement and attic to keep in heated air.
- Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Install fresh batteries too.
