Shed light efficiently
Save both outdoors and indoors
Outdoor lighting
By properly selecting and placing outdoor lighting fixtures, you can improve safety as well as significantly lower your energy costs.
• Improve safety and security outdoors with motion-sensor lighting. They come on only when needed, reducing energy use.
• Replace outdoor incandescent lights with ENERGY STAR®-certified compact fluorescents rated for cold temperatures.
• Use fixtures with photo-eye controls to turn lights on at dusk and off at dawn.
• Use fixtures that control glare and won't spill light on neighboring property or into the sky.
Indoor lighting
Save energy by not wasting it: turn off lights when they're not needed.
• Use timers rather than remembering to turn lights on and off.
• Replace your most-used incandescent bulbs and fixtures with fluorescents. Compared to incandescents, they run cooler, last longer and save about $40 over the life of each bulb.
Be sure to recycle your spent lightbulbs. Find a location near you at http://www.co.dane.wi.us/pwht/recycle/lamps_bulbs.aspx.
