Get ready for the weather ahead
  • Be sure your furnace is ready for winter heating service. Have a professional check your heating system at least every other year.
  • Seal any through-wall air conditioners with air-tight covers. Remove window units.
  • Be sure your home insulation is adequate. If your attic has less than 7 inches of insulation, consider adding more.
    • In southern Wisconsin, a value of R-38 or more is recommended for existing homes.
    • If your walls have no insulation between the studs, insulating the cavities can add comfort and save on energy costs.
  • Make sure storm windows are closed and sealed well.
  • Make sure your dryer's vent cap keeps out cold air. Remove lint buildup in the vent cap and hose. Replace any plastic vent with metal.
  • Seal around sewer vent piping in the basement and attic to keep in heated air.
  • Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Install fresh batteries too.
