Get warm and comfortable
Take these energy-wise steps for the heating season
It pays to use energy wisely. This is particularly important when you need to maintain comfort despite the winter chill outside. You can keep your home warm and cozy yet still control your energy costs.
Be sure you're 'energy ready' for winter. Get your furnace serviced now if it hasn't been checked recently. A well-maintained furnace provides more reliable and fuel-efficient service. Contact a qualified heating specialist. Or call MGE at (608) 252-7333 or visit our Web site (mge.com/furnaces).
• Check your furnace filter every month, and replace the filter when dirty to maintain furnace efficiency.
• Consider investing in a new, high-efficiency furnace if your current unit has a pilot light. A new furnace could save you up to 40 cents for every heating dollar you currently spend.
• Replace an ordinary thermostat with a setback model. For more on setback thermostats, call (608) 252-7117 and request a free fact sheet.
• Lower the thermostat at night and when you're away (55°F lowest setting). Save 1% for every 1°F temperature decrease for an eight-hour setback. If all our residential customers did this for an entire winter, we could save enough gas to serve more than 3,000 homes for a whole year!
• Keep heated air from escaping: Seal around the sewer vent pipe in your basement and attic.
• Let the sun in during the day to reduce heating costs.
• Close drapes and shades at night to save money and improve comfort.
• Close your fireplace damper after the fire is out to stop drafts and save money.
