Leaving town for a vacation?

Things to do before you go on an extended trip

Notify MGE before you leave
Call or visit MGE to make payment arrangements if any energy bills will come due while you're away. Or sign up at mge.com for online billing to schedule your payment before you go.

Unplug appliances that won't be used while you're gone
This includes items such as computer, modem, TV and audio/visual equipment.

Install timers on several indoor lights
And set them to simulate your evening routine. For further savings, use compact fluorescents in those lights.

Adjust your water heater
If you have a gas water heater, set it to "pilot" or a "vacation" setting. If your unit is electric, turn it off.

Turn off water to the washing machine
If a hose breaks, you could have a flood.

Seal up your home for safety
Leave with the windows closed and all the doors locked.

Be reachable in an emergency
Give someone the phone number where you can be reached as well as your vehicle's license plate number and trip itinerary.
