Make safety an integral part of your project planning
Spring brings people and projects out of hibernation
A vital ingredient for successful spring projects is safety.
When we all engage in safe practices, we protect ourselves, our family and neighbors. Practicing safety can:
- Avoid damage to property.
- Prevent injury, even death.
When considering outside projects this spring, remember the following:
Notify Diggers Hotline. Be sure to call Diggers Hotline at least three working days before you begin a project that requires digging or working near overhead lines.
- Call toll free, 1-800-242-8511, anytime, seven days a week.
Participating municipalities and utilities can then mark the location of any underground services on your property.
Damaging a line or pipe is not only dangerous, it will also be expensive if you have not contacted Diggers Hotline ahead of time.
Use electricity and powered equipment with care. Be sure your equipment is in safe working condition, that wires are not exposed or frayed and that these devices are approved by Underwriters Laboratory.
- When using a hose or sprinkler, don’t let water contact overhead wires.
- Be sure your outdoor wiring is on a separate circuit of sufficient amperage for your heavy-duty equipment and power tools.
- Teach children at an early age about electricity and the importance of practicing electric safety.
Avoid contact with the electrical service entrance to your building when painting or doing other repairs.
Work with dry hands. Never use or switch an appliance on or off with wet hands.
