Quick quiz

I am shopping for a new clothes dryer. Electric ones cost about $50 less to buy than gas. Is it more expensive to operate an electric dryer or a gas one?

Natural gas dryers operate at one third the cost of electric dryers. The yearly cost for a gas dryer for a family of four is $48 compared to $160 for an electric model, so you'll recoup that extra $50 the first year in savings. If you have natural gas to your house but need a gas line run for a dryer, you can call MGE at 252-7373 for a free piping estimate or call a local contractor.

If you're thinking of replacing your clothes washer, look for an ENERGY STAR® model. ENERGY STAR models cost less to operate.
