Is there a way to compare my energy use to other homes in the area?

A new tool just launched on our website can help you compare energy use in three ways. Energy use comparisons are good indicators — showing if you can take energy-savings steps at home.

By signing in to the "Energy Use Comparison" section of My Account on mge.com, you can make three different energy comparisons:

• Year to year. Bar charts show your electric and gas use this year compared to last year.
• Other Madison homes. Line graphs display your energy use over the past 12 months compared to the average energy use of single-family homes in Madison.
  • You'll also get a summary statement that may read something like this:
    You used 16% less electricity than the average Madison home and spent $77 less.
• Same-size homes. Bar charts highlight how your monthly electric use and natural gas heating efficiency compare to the average of other Madison homes that are similar in size.

This comparison asks you to enter the square footage of your home's heated area and the year the home was built.
