Wind power
Our 11.22-MW wind farm in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, produces enough clean, renewable electricity to power 3,300 homes. Visit Wind Power for more information.
MGE has contracted for new Wisconsin and Iowa-based wind power for our customers. Visit MGE Moving Forward for more information.

Solar power
In partnership with customers, MGE has purchased, installed and operates several different kinds of solar photovoltaic systems throughout our service area.
Visit Solar Power to learn more about these systems and how they are performing. |

Customer-owned renewable electricity systems
Customers can generate their own electricity from solar or wind power and receive credit on their MGE utility bills for the electricity delivered to MGE's distribution system.
Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program can help with the system design, finding contractors and financing the system. Wisconsin utility customers fund this program through charges on their utility bills.

Landfill gas
Dane County Rodefeld Landfill
MGE purchases electricity from the Dane County Rodefeld Landfill where generators run on methane gas. Dane County taps into the methane gas produced naturally in the landfill. The generators export the energy to MGE's distribution system. On average, the Rodefeld Landfill generators produce about 25,000,000 kWh per year, or enough electricity to power about 3,400 homes.

Metropolitan Refuse District Landfill
This project tests the application of a Stirling engine matched to a 55-kW generator to generate electricity. It may offer an economical generation alternative for small- to medium-size landfills.

Biodiesel
Biodiesel is
a clean-burning alternative fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources. It is biodegradable, nontoxic and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.
MGE uses B20 biodiesel fuel for about 100 trucks and equipment in our fleet that
refuel at our Central Service Center. We use a blend of biodiesel and petroleum
diesel year-round. The biodiesel fuel costs about 40% more than regular diesel
fuel. We used about 15,000 gallons of biodiesel last year.

Electricity from sugar
MGE and Virent Systems, Inc., are building the first system capable of converting sugar into power. Using Virent's patented process, liquid sugar will be chemically converted into hydrogen. This hydrogen will be combined with natural gas to fuel a small engine generator to produce electricity.
