Recycling

MGE received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Environmental Performance in 2005 for recycling construction materials at the West Campus Cogeneration Facility.

MGE was honored for its commitment to recycling, which not only reduces environmental impacts, but also saves money.

As your community energy company, we are committed to reducing and reusing as many products as possible. To help reclaim and recycle mercury, we launched a thermostat-recycling program for customers several years ago.

Bring your old thermostat to our general office at 133 S. Blair St. anytime during business hours. We'll make sure it is recycled appropriately.

Scrap wire, iron and other metals have been sold for reuse for years. Our paper recycling began in earnest in 1985.

During 2006, we recycled:

  • 83,294 pounds of copper.
  • 312,135 pounds of steel/iron.
  • 16,998 pounds of lead.
  • 131,124 pounds of aluminum.
  • 8,323 pounds of miscellaneous metal.
  • 65 tons of paper.
