Wisconsin Voluntary Emission Reduction Registry
MGE is one of the first companies in Wisconsin to enroll in a Department of Natural Resources program to acknowledge emission reductions not required by law and go beyond compliance.
MGE submitted documentation for emission reductions from the following projects in 2003 and 2004:
Paper-derived fuel (PDF) use at Blount Station
PDF is a mix of shredded pre-consumer waste that cannot otherwise be recycled. Burning PDF:
- Offsets coal.
- Reduces emissions.
- Saves landfill space.
- Decreases ash production.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles
MGE's fleet includes four cars, one van and one pickup that run on clean-burning natural gas. We have a CNG refueling station open to the public by appointment.
Biodiesel as fleet alternative fuel
MGE uses biodiesel fuel in the vehicles that refuel at the downtown Central Service Center. Biodiesel is:
- Produced from a variety of renewable resources such as waste vegetable oils, cooking oil, soybean oil and animal fat.
- Replaces petroleum diesel.
- Reduces tailpipe emissions.
- Biodegradable.
Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel for generators
MGE has over 50 diesel generators at commercial and industrial sites in the Madison area. We use ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in these generators and at Blount Station to reduce sulfur dioxides and particulate matter.
Combustion initiative at Columbia Generating Station
We are joint owners of this plant with Alliant Energy and Wisconsin Public Service Corporation. Reductions of nitrogen oxide emissions resulted from:
- Improvements to the coal measurement and pulverizing equipment.
- Changes to the burners.
- Installation of a separate over-fire system.
- Better controls and monitoring of the combustion process.
MGE reductions listed in the registry for 2002 and 2003:
- 685 tons of nitrogen oxides reduced
- 267 tons of sulfur dioxide reduced
- 24 tons of particulate matter reduced
