Where can I pay my bill in person?

You can make your bill payments at MGE's Madison office or MGE's locations in Elroy, Prairie du Chien, or Viroqua. You may also pay at several retail outlets where a $1.00 per-transaction fee applies.

Where can I pay my bill online?

You can view and pay your MGE energy bill online through CheckFree®. Sign up.
Your MGE paper bills will automatically stop after you have registered.

Can I use my debit card/credit card?

Yes, but only by telephone:

  • Processing fee of $5.95 per transaction applies.
  • $600.00 maximum payment per transaction.

Call 1-800-526-5995. You'll need:

  • Your MGE account number.
  • Amount you want to pay.
  • The method of payment along with the zip code of the mailing address for a credit/debit card.

Check payment status 24/7 online:

Sign in to My Account if you have an online account.
Register if you are new.

Or by phone:

Call MGE's automated system at 608-252-4700, and press 1. You'll need your MGE account number and Personal Identification Number (PIN).

If those two options don't work for you, call MGE's Customer Service Department at 608-252-7222, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please have your PIN available when calling.


CheckFree Questions

What do I do if CheckFree rejects my payment?

Log into your CheckFree account.

  • Verify your payment option is current. Go to "MyCheckFree Profile," then click on "My Payment Accounts" to edit your payment options.
  • If you have moved, please be sure you are using the correct MGE account number. If not, you'll need to create a new E-Bill. Click "Add E-Bill." Select MGE from the list, and enter your new account number.
  • CheckFree is only allowed to accept checking account payments for MGE bills. Credit/debit cards cannot be used.

Why can't I use Checkfree after registering? It is asking me to verify my information.

CheckFree uses an Identity Theft Prevention program during the sign-up process. If the information you enter does not match what they have on file, you will need to use the mail-in form to provide additional information.

MGE Bill Questions

Why is my bill so high?

Many factors can affect your bill:

  • More days in the billing cycle.
  • Colder weather (i.e., more heating use).
  • Warmer weather (i.e., air-conditioning).
  • More energy use.

Lifestyle, square footage, age of the home/apartment, and number of people affect your energy use and corresponding cost.

How much do I owe?

Check your account balance and current charges online 24/7:

Sign in to My Account if you have an online account.
Register if you are new.

Or by phone:

Call MGE's automated system at 608-252-4700, and press 1. You'll need your MGE account number and PIN.

Why haven't I received a paper bill?

Typically, paper bill delivery ends because you may have attempted to register with MGE's online bill provider, CheckFree. During the initial CheckFree registration process, your MGE paper bill is automatically turned off. Even if you chose not to make payments online. You may ask MGE to turn your paper bills back on by emailing Customer Service at CustomerServices@mge.com or by calling Customer Service at 608-252-7222, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.


Collections Questions

What if my MGE account has been sent to a collection agency?

Please call State Collection Service, Inc., at 608-661-3000 or toll-free at 1-800-477-7474, then press Option 1 and then Option 2. You may also access their Web site.

Who can I contact to dispute MGE reporting my account to the credit bureau?

You may contact Transunion directly at 1-800-916-8800 to dispute the report, or visit their Web site.

You may also call MGE's Customer Service Department at 608-252-7222 to discuss your account. Please have your account number and PIN available when calling.
