Backup Generation Service available

If your business has monthly demand of at least 75 kW and needs higher-than-average electric reliability, learn more about MGE's Backup Generation Service.

Backup Generation Service (BGS) helps businesses that need higher-than-average electric reliability. BGS offers on-site electric generation supplied by diesel generators that are owned, operated and maintained by MGE. The service was closed to new customers, but now it's offered on a limited basis as generators become available that can be matched with appropriately sized businesses.

BGS increases reliability without the cost of purchasing or maintaining your own equipment. If your power is interrupted, the generator automatically switches on. It carries your entire electric service until power from MGE's system is restored. MGE may occasionally operate the generator to meet system load requirements. This will not disrupt your utility service.

What it costs

Customers are responsible for the cost of site preparation, concrete pad, easements, building permits and a monthly service charge. The service charge is based on your Customer Maximum Kilowatt (kW) Demand for electricity and is currently $0.06575 per kW per day. The minimum service agreement is three years.

Who can participate

Your business must be an MGE electric customer, have a monthly demand of at least 75 kW and have room to locate a generator set on the property.
