Benchmarking building energy use

Learn how energy use at your facility compares to similar types of businesses. Our benchmarking database puts some perspective on your building’s performance.

Commercial buildings use 40% of all energy consumed in the United States. Rising energy prices and global environmental concerns make understanding your facility's energy use important. Benchmarking compares your building's energy use to others with similar characteristics. Knowing if your facility is high, low or average can guide investment decisions and operating practices. This comparison may also suggest energy-use performance goals.

MGE is expanding its database of building energy benchmarks, which utilizes historical energy-use data and customer-reported square footage. Energy use intensities (therms or kilowatt-hours per square foot) are available for many types of businesses. Categories include churches, cold storage facilities, grocery stores, laboratories, manufacturing plants, office buildings, printers, restaurants, retailers and warehouses.

You can add your business to the database and receive a comparison of your facility's energy use to similar buildings in this area. No individual facility data or identification is presented to maintain customer confidentiality. To participate, call 608-252-7007 and ask to speak to a Commercial Account Manager. Working together we can help control energy costs.
